Introduction to Taiwan Society for Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
With the rapid development of human genome projects, people have learned how to unravel the huge and complicated data inside the biosystem; also the limitations of traditional research methods for biology were revealed. In addition, how to process, digest, and explain the tremendous amount of information gathered in genome projects has become one of the biggest challenges to genome researchers. Therefore, a multi-field-related knowledge called bioinformatics has emerged. The growth of bioinformatics is undoubtedly integrating research of genome and molecular biology and is also taking biomedical research to a new level.
Bioinformatics is a new subject that involves processing many varied databases and extracting new biological knowledge with the support of modern computational and internet technology. The expeditious development of bioinformatics is causing a revolution in biological research methods, and is also affecting medicine and human life in many aspects. Concerning this issue, a group of scientists in biology, informatics, and medicine established “Bioinformatics Society Taiwan” in December, 2000. The goal of this organization is to accelerate the development of bioinformatics in Taiwan with cooperation between different fields.
